Pagers - Lost in technology

Pagers, beepers or bleeper one thing many names but now the thing lost in technology. Fifteen years after the invention of the pagers people don’t even remember about them. There was a time when people use to carry pagers with them now they have no idea where those pagers are gone. For some mobile dealers it is a story with no meaning. We can say that pagers are paralyzed victims of the developing technology.

There was a time when pagers were considered as an entity for the elite, but with the flow of time it became an affordable gadget. Although soon after the invention of accessible appliances, enabling instant communication, no wonder the market saw replacement of pagers in a large number. With the welcome of mobile phones we had to say goodbye to the pagers as mobiles were more convenient and better in almost all aspects in comparison with the pagers.

Pagers marked its attendance in the market with Motorola Playboy I in the year 1974. But it took another two decades for a successful launched in India in 1995. Motorola was a major player with nearly 80 per cent of the market share. The other companies included Mobilink, Pagelink, BPL, Usha Martin telecom and Easy Call. At that time pagers were a medium to contact the person whom you need immediately, they were portable light in weight which are easy to carry generally in a pocket or can be worn in a belt

The business peaked in 1998 with the subscriber base reaching nearly 2 million. However, the number dropped to less than 500,000 in 2002. In many countries, the pager continued to exist side by side with the mobile phone. However, in India it was not to be. In 2002 the major player Motorola stopped manufacturing pagers in India and with that it seemed to be the end of pagers in India.

Today if u wish to buy a pager then it will be a pretty tough job to find them as you won’t be able to find pagers in any mobile and other electronic gadget outlet whether it is in Sarojini Nagar , Connaught place or Kamla Nagar . Currently pagers have lost their identity, their name and are good for nothing. To buy it you have to rush to the crowded lanes of Chandini chowk’s electronic market, where you can find almost every electronic gadget. Other than that they are lost in the technology.
